Scouting is an essential component of building a successful football team. Identifying talented players with the potential to make an impact requires a keen eye for specific qualities and attributes.
It is important to remember, there is much more to look for other than just the technical ability of a player. They are the first point on this list, but you should definitely no overlook the others...
Technical Skills
First and foremost, assess the player's technical abilities. Look for proficient ball control, precise passing, accurate shooting, and excellent dribbling skills. A player's technical prowess can greatly influence their effectiveness on the field and their ability to contribute to the team's overall performance. The technical skills you are looking for will differ depending on the position you are looking at. For example, a centre back, needs to be a much different player than a winger.
Tactical Understanding
Evaluate the player's understanding of the game and their ability to adapt tactically. Observe their positioning, decision-making, and awareness of space on the field. A player who can read the game well and make intelligent choices is an asset to any team. This includes what they do when they are not on the ball. Where is the defender positioned and how do they act when their team are in attack?
Physical Attributes
Assess the player's physical attributes, including speed, agility, strength, and endurance. These factors play a crucial role in a player's ability to compete effectively at different levels of the game. Consider how their physical attributes complement their playing style and position. If you are scouting younger players, you also have to consider how mature they are and how they could 'grow into' becoming a better player.
Mental Toughness
Look for signs of mental resilience and composure under pressure. A player who remains calm, focused, and determined even in challenging situations can make a significant difference in critical moments of a match. Mental toughness is especially important in high-pressure competitions.
Work Ethic & Attitude
Evaluate the player's work ethic, discipline, and attitude towards training and teamwork. A strong work ethic indicates a player's dedication and willingness to continuously improve. Additionally, observe how they interact with teammates and coaches, as positive chemistry and a cooperative mindset contribute to a harmonious team environment. You could also see if they are constantly moaning or arguing with the officials which is probably not a good sign.
Game Intelligence
Consider the player's ability to read and anticipate the flow of the game. Look for players who demonstrate good vision, spatial awareness, and the ability to make quick, accurate decisions. A player with high game intelligence can create scoring opportunities, exploit gaps in the opposition's defence, and contribute to effective team strategies. They should know their role and responsibilities inside out and be able to adapt to different game situations.

As you can probably tell, some of the above will need more than just a single game to assess. Therefore, you can monitor players over time and see how they get on over a number of fixtures, potentially at different venues, and also against different types of opponents. The scouting process will often include watching on video and live.
Remember, each position may require specific qualities, so tailor your scouting criteria accordingly. With careful evaluation and a sharp eye for talent, you can uncover hidden gems and contribute to the success of your team.
By assessing technical abilities, tactical understanding, physical attributes, mental toughness, work ethic, and game intelligence, you can identify players who have the potential to excel and make a positive impact on your team.
